Our Current sermon Series

Though the Apostle Paul had a difficult life, he was happy. The joy of the Lord sustained him and made him stand out in a crowd. Today, many folks are experiencing trials and troubles that threaten to steal their joy. Does the Bible have an answer for how to be happy right in the middle of life’s messes?

On January 24th, we begin a new Sunday morning series which we are calling, "Joy in the Midst of Life." In the four short chapters (104 verses) of the book of Philippians, the Apostle Paul speaks of joy, gladness, and rejoicing sixteen different times! Apparently, it is a Christian duty for everyone to be as happy as he can.

But God’s answer is not simply to smile until our cheeks hurt. Even Jesus wept while he was here. We all have problems and pains in this fallen world. We must not flippantly rejoice when there is real sorrow to be grieved. But neither can we ignore our duty to move further up and further in to the joy of knowing God. This series is about experiencing the confidence and contentment that come from knowing that if God is for you, none can stand against you.

Please join us for God’s lessons on joy in the midst of life.

We can all find reasons not to enjoy one another, as if nitpickign were a spiritual gift! But Paul found reasons to love his fellow believers. He held other Christians "in his heart," yearning to be with them again, with the "affection of Christ Jesus"! Wow, that is a deep and sincere love. This Sunday we plan to ask the question, "Can We Enjoy One Another?" Of course, the Biblical answer is "yes," but in this sermon we will find out how to do so. Please join us for this challenging study from Philippians 1.3-8 on caring for less than perfect people.

The Apostle prays in Philippians 1.9 that our love will "abound more and more." So the title for this week's sermon is, "I Need More Love!" One of the old writers spoke about the power of an expulsive affection. He was referring to the fact that it is impossible to quit picturing pink elephants in your mind by saying "no" to pink elephants. We must say "yes" to something else. In other words, only a greater vision, a more powerful affection, a deeper love, can drive out that which should leave. Now for the Christian, what should leave is sin, and the expulsive affection is love. More love to Thee, O Christ, more love to Thee!

Building on last week's sermon, we continue to think about how love changes our lives (called sanctification). Philippians 1.9-11 gives us some reasons. We will ask, "Why Do I Need More Love?" and find out the answers: so that we progress in holiness, are filled with the fruit of the Holy Spirit, and are enabled to give glory to God!
