Whiz Kids provides an exciting opportunity for churches to partner together to help children in our community. As a ministry of City Gospel Mission, Whiz Kids seeks to develop a one-on-one relationship between a child who needs help succeeding at school and a caring adult, all in the context of a faith experience.
During the 2010-2011 school year, folks from five churches are working together to tutor 21 third and fourth grade students at Winton Woods Elementary School. We develop new friendships, share the love of Jesus, improve reading and math skills, and thoroughly enjoy being used by the Lord in this great ministry. Each tutor works with one student, but it is true that two lives are changed! The four churches involved were Forest Dale Church of Christ, Church of the Covenant, Messiah Lutheran Church, Compass Community Church and Greenhills Community Church.

When Dr. Harvie Conn joined with Dr. Jack Miller on a mission trip to Uganda in the summer of 1980, they arrived in Kampala to find that Idi Amin had pilfered all but two of the 150 city trucks for army supplies. The city of nearly 1 million people stank from the massive piles of garbage piled on every street corner. Children climbed on these garbage mountains to throw rocks at the rats. The mission team asked: “What can we do to dramatize God’s love for the city and our willingness to serve in humility?” They decided to haul away the garbage. They found the Minister of Health and received permission to use the two working trucks to spend long days smelling refuse and singing gospel songs. Literally hundreds of people circled the piles to watch and wonder who and why someone would clean their garbage. Then they asked, “Why?” and the team preached Jesus. Think about that!
