Our Deacons
Deacons minister to God’s people in important ways in our church and denomination. We understand the Bible to teach that this office is one of sympathy and service, modeled after the example of the Lord Jesus. Additionally, the diaconal ministry expresses also the communion of saints, especially in their helping one another in time of need. We are privileged as a church to have four men serving our people in this work.
KEVIN GERNDT
Pictured are Kevin, his wife, Diane, and children David and Amelia. Kevin writes: I have been a deacon (first at an Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Michigan, and now at the Church of the Covenant) for more than 9 years. I came to know Christ as Lord and Savior as an adult in 1983; a series of life challenges and failures showed my need for a Savior, and friends were sharing Christ with me. After studying God’s Word in church, at home and via evangelical radio preaching, I learned of the reformed faith, where God seemed to become even bigger, as Old and New Testament teaching highlighted their unity rather than the differences. Our Lord has given me a consistent desire to seek depth in biblical answers to life’s questions and challenges. Opportunities to volunteer as a leader and teacher led to further growth. The godly men around me at the OPC church in Michigan further challenged my growth, culminating in a year-long, weekly study with the pastor and several other men for the office of deacon. I felt God’s hand upon me during this time, and that led to the elders’ hands being laid on me; thus, I was ordained a deacon. Our church focuses on a traditional approach to worship, family-centered fellowship, and a commitment to the Word preached and taught as the foundation for both salvation and sanctification. We are a diverse collection of individuals, unified under the cross of Christ, learning how to better love His people in the church, and seeking to show him to those whom He has placed in our local area, and the greater world as we support missionaries around the globe.
