Our Mission

The Mission of our church describes in one sentence what we are about. Stated another way, it reminds us and others of WHY Church of the Covenant exists. It is a general, Biblical statement (which should be similar to any other church which is seeking to be faithful to the Scriptures and the Great Commission). Because we are a PCA church, it includes the five essentials of a Biblically healthy church as defined by our denomination: Worship, Education, Evangelism, Mercy, and Fellowship. Here, then, is our mission statement (please note that each phrase has supporting Bible verses below):

By God's grace and for his glory,
the Church of the Covenant makes faithful disciples of Jesus
by equipping and empowering God’s people
to reach up in worship and devotion, and
to reach in through loving care for one another, and
to reach out in word and deed.

Biblical Proofs

  • By God’s Grace
    • 2Corinthians 9.8: And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.
    • 2Corinthians 12.9: But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

  • For His Glory
    • 1Corinthians 10.31: So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

  • The Church of the Covenant Makes Faithful Disciples of Jesus
    • Matthew 28.18-20: And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

  • By Equipping God’s People
    • Ephesians 4.11-14: And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.

  • And By Empowering God’s People:
    • 1Corinthians 12.1, 4-7: Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed….  Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
    • Romans 12.6: Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them.
    • 1Peter 4.10: As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace.

  • To Reach Up In Worship
    • Hebrews 12.28-29: Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.
    • Psalm 95.1-7: Oh come, let us sing to the LORD; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker! For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.

  • To Reach Up in Devotion
    • Matthew 6.5-6: “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”

  • To Reach In Through Loving Care for One Another
    • 1John 4.11-12: Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.

  • To Reach Out in Word
    • 2Corinthians 5.17-19: Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.

  • To Reach Out in Deed
    • Luke 10.33-37: “But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’ Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.”
    • Micah 6.8: He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
    • Jeremiah 29.7: But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.
