Lighting the Way
Navigating treacherous shoals is not easy. The successful sea captain must carefully maneuver around many hidden dangers. Once upon a time, lighthouses were a primary means of maritime navigation; today buoys, fog signals, and even GPS are used by the Coast Guard to mark channels and guide mariners past rocks, wrecks, sandbars, and other obstructions. Life, too, is treacherous. How do we find our way with so many voices clamoring for attention and allegiance? Like our brave sea captain, we look for markers.
A Lamp for our feet
Biblical preaching does not pretend to have every answer or solve every problem, nor does it offer simplistic answers in a complex world. Instead, it gives us truth to help explain our everyday lives, guidelines to direct our choices in the rough seas we face Monday through Saturday, and buoys to warn us about great dangers ahead. We are not too proud to admit that we need guidance, and God’s word is a lamp for our feet and a light for our path. Faithful preaching is about hearing the voice of Jesus whispering through the din of noise and confusion—the voice of a good shepherd, the Word of life, the call of compassion and mercy.
